STYROFOAM* Insulating Sheathing Products Qualify as Weather-Resistive Barriers

Orlando ,FL - January 13, 2005

The Dow Chemical Company announced today that several of its STYROFOAM* extruded polystyrene insulation and polyisocyanurate insulated sheathing products recently passed certified, third-party evaluations to qualify as “weather-resistive barriers” for residential construction.

“Not only will STYROFOAM insulation continue to serve as excellent thermal insulators in exterior walls, but they now have the added feature of qualifying as weather-resistive barriers,” said Scott Young, North American residential market manager, Dow Building & Construction (B&C). “This is an added value for homeowners who already count on STYROFOAM for its important energy-saving properties.”

Changes to building codes in several states now require the installation of a weather-resistive barrier within all exterior wall assemblies in residential construction. In testing conducted by an independent, code-accredited test laboratory, seven types of STYROFOAM and Dow polyisocyanurate insulation qualify as weather-resistive barriers when installed according to specific installation instructions for foam as a weather-resistive barrier, including STYROFOAM* DURAMATE* Plus, STYROFOAM Residential Sheathing, STYROFOAM Tongue & Groove, STYROFOAM Square Edge, THERMAX*, Super TUFF-R* and TUFF-R*.
